Because I’ve been searching my ass off for these settings, I decided to help my fellow xbmc lovers.

Problem: you can set the HDMI setting in xbmc, but the sound won’t pump through it.

You can find all sorts of information on the internet like recompile alsa from scratch, fiddle with config files, etc. but nothing works.

Solution: stop messing about and enable the setting in the bios:

Please note:  You have to enable ‘Onboard HDMI HD Audio’ which is turned off in the picture ;)

After that it usually works ‘out of the box’ like so (sorry for the Dutch, but you’ll get the message):

If it still doesn’t work, you probably need to fiddle with the ‘Preferences’ -> ‘Sound Preferences’ on your Ubuntu Desktop (if you have one ;) ).

It took me two days to find the setting in the bios…

xbmc is al een hele toffe mediacenter, maar wel alleen voor je opgeslagen audio en video sjizzle.

de jongens van boxee hebben xbmc al basis gebruikt en hebben daar een heel ‘online content’ platform op gebouwd. Met andere woorden, je kunt alle content die online beschikbaar is via je afstandsbediening bedienen! twitter, facebook, youtube, rss-feeds, you name it, allemaal onder de knop van je afstandsbediening naar je TV.

Erg tof, maar de experience is nog erg ‘Bèta’.

Voor iedereen met een laptopje en linux: installeert powertop! (aptitude install powertop)

Je draait het even als root en het verzamelt allerlei informatie waarom je computer steeds bezig is met het nutteloos verbruiken van energie! Met andere woorden, het geeft je tips hoe je meer uit je accu kunt halen.

De tips zijn vaak ingewikkelde systeeminstellingen kun je direct toepassen door een druk op de knop. Enorm handig en nuttig dus :)

Na het gebruiken van mythbuntu, mediaportal en de XP- en Vistaversies van Microsoft Media Center Edition ben ik gestop met zoeken.

Als je een mediacenter zoekt, puur voor het afspelen van je films en het beluisteren van je muziek heb je eigenlijk niets meer nodig dan xbmc. Snel, handig, doet alles wat je wilt. Ook het opzoeken van albumhoesjes en filmreviews en ratings (ja, op de ‘mainstream’ populaire sites als imdb en last.fm) zitten er standaard allemaal erg goed geimplementeerd in.

Een korte google levert al een hele bruikbare handleiding op hoe je dit (na het installeren van karmic koala bijvoorbeeld ;) ) snel kunt installeren via de CLI.

Na lang (LANG) stoeien met de mce-remote dacht ik dat mijn draadloze toetsenbord en muis een conflict veroorzaakten, maar het bleek iets anders. Ik was niet zo bekend met LIRC en had deze dan ook via het ‘Ubuntu Software Center’ geïnstalleerd waarmee je in eerste instantie een very nice GUI krijgt waarbij de installatie eenvoudig lijkt. Maar bij het kiezen van de juiste IR-stuff werkt het vervolgens niet!

Blijkt dat als je het via de CLI doet, en daar bij de installatie al de juiste IR-stuff kiest je in 20 seconden up and running bent.

Iets te vroeg Karmic Koala uit de boom geschoten. Na de installatie op mijn NetBookje wat te hebben getweaked hier en daar ben ik enorm enthousiast geworden! Het probleem met de wireless was namelijk na een update / driver installatie opgelost (zat er blijkbaar bij de release nog niet direct in …)

Moest nog wel wat tweaken aan de ‘jumpy touchpad’ op de mini10v en wat leuke tweaks zodat de solid state disk niet te snel naar de getver gaat, maar dan heb je ook wat!

Verder nog wat uitrolletjes gedaan op ‘t werk, ook zeer smooth allemaal…

Kortom, wederom een enthousiasteling, laat Windows 7 maar voor wat het is ;)

Fris en fruitig begon ik met het installeren van de nieuwe Ubuntu 9.10. Blind er van uitgaande dat de installatie een spreekwoordelijke ‘breeze’ zou zijn, omdat de vorige versie al mijn nieuwe Dell mini 10v hardware zonder problemen herkende, installeerde en werkend opleverde. Blijkbaar geldt ook voor Ubuntu dat behaalde resultaten uit het verleden geen garantie zijn voor de toekomst. Erg vreemd, want de spulletjes in het apparaat zijn redelijk nieuw te noemen en geen vreemde zooi.

Na de installatie bleek mijn wireless dus niet te werken. Grrr en godver. En ik had het ding juist gekocht omdat de wireless kaart in mijn ‘oude’ nieuwe laptop niet goed werkt en ik de vele telefoontjes met de Hell-desk van Packard Bell maar heb opgegeven, want die mensen zijn gewoon te dom.

“Hoe weet u dan zeker dat het een hardwareprobleem is?”
“Omdat de wifi-kaart op 3 verschillende besturingssystemen na zo’n 9 minuten uitvalt en niet meer aan de praat is te krijgen?”
“Misschien Windows Vista opnieuw installeren, dat helpt vaak wel …”

Windows 7 deed het prima op mijn lekkere goedkope Dell, maar was de zogenaamde Release Candidate die natuurlijk een keer stopt met starten. Dan wint toch mijn voorliefde voor Linux het weer even als er een nieuwe versie uitkomt. Want we willen natuurlijk niet op de illegale toer, dat mag dus niet …

Daarna nog even wat installaties op ‘het werk’ geprobeerd. We hebben een flink aantal werkplekken waar eigenlijk alleen maar lokaal Firefox wordt gebruikt en voor het echte interessante spul worden sessies met een Terminal Server gestart. Dus Ubuntu for the win, zou je zeggen…

Bij de eerste installatie ging het redelijk snel ‘fout’. De netwerkinterface kwam pas na 10 minuten op, heel bijzonder. Nadat je dan eindelijk verbinding hebt, krijg je dus blijkbaar na de nagelnieuwe installatie nog even 30mb aan updates voor je kano en dan werkt alles weer even net iets beter.

Misschien had Canonical toch beter even kunnen wachten en Ubuntu 9.11 kunnen uitbrengen…

Ik begin een beetje af te haken … Toch maar even Windows7 ‘ergens verkrijgen’ denk ik.

So, I finally decided to take the plunge and let my good friend and collegue take the honours for installing the 2GB RAM upgrade. Piece of cake that was! For me though, because you have to take the whole thing apart and the thing isn’t really made for that. After a lot of cracks and tiny pieces of broken off plastic bits and screws all over the place the mini finally got back together again and was up and running with 2GB of ram.

I actually send an email to Dell to ask them how the warrantee will work for me now, I didn’t get an official reply, but our account manager (at work) told me it shouldn’t be any problem at all, worst case would be, that in case of a technical problem, I have to put all the original parts back in for troubleshooting purposes, but warrantee shouldn’t be a problem at all. I wonder how that will work out in case of a real problem, but hey, we got it up and running again.

Downloaded Windows 7, installation was a breeze again, but after a lot of tweaking and tuning I am really suprised how well it works. I scaled down some of the items (desktop icons, task bar) to get a little more space in my screen, installed all the programs I need and I must say it works like a charm. I installed some of the ‘XP’ drivers from the Dell website (for the wifi enable/disable button and the mousepad, it’s really jumpy again without it). Bottom line, I love it. Better than Windows XP (a wee bit slower, but I expected that) and Ubuntu or Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

I’m glad I used the whole Vortex disk for it (it was a dual boot earlier) cuz i’m keeping this as my only OS on my mini.

Battery life is still awesome, looks like i’m getting 7-8 hours now, even seems Windows 7 is a bit more efficient than Xp or Ubuntu (it really shuts off quickly while idle, needs some tuning perhaps, but that really saves alot of power).

After a lot of frustration why I couldn’t get my fancy Compiz desktop working on my GM965 I decided to call my personal guru, roedie (see the links on the right). As if god himself was playing with it, we both found (skyping along) the solution at the same time, so actually I kinda want to take the credits for this myself (A)

Problem: can’t get Compiz working (the visual effects ‘Extra’ radiobutton says they cannot be enabled).
Solution: it appeared the card was blacklisted, so you have to tell Compiz to NOT check this.

lspci: 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

as root or sudo do the following:
create the file: ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
add the following line: SKIP_CHECKS=yes

and try again ;)

this post is for my own reference and future frustration and ofcourse to help some others with the same crappy card. Until now I didn’t see any reason why it’s blacklisted, even the water and fire plugins work (which I thought didn’t earlier).

Don’t tell any big lies today.  Small ones can be just as effective.
