I really don’t like travelling by train, first of all, I never really understand the times the depart and arrive. Furthermore, it’s annoying as hell when there are a lot of people in the same wagon etc etc.

I’d prefer travelling by car anytime. But I think that has changed today. This post is written with iPhone tethering with my Packard Bell notebook in a train.

Connection drops every once and a while because of the telephony network switching but it’s really workable.

I can do anything I want, and it’s not annoyingly slow at all.

Let’s just hope that T-Mobile will allow this kind of use of the iPhone, without having to pay for an extra data-plan or anything.

w0ot, I turned into a real nerd today …

First blog post with iPhone 3G tethering.

I reinstalled my ‘old’ Packard Bell notebook with a dual-boot XP SP3 and Ubuntu 9.04 (to test the setup for my new Dell) to be able to use it, because Ubuntu will probably not supoprt iPhone tethering ‘out of the box’ (no jailbreak) anytime soon.

When my new Dell will finally arrive i’ll have the ultimate wireless setup! yeay!

If only the damn thing would arrive goddamnit.

Many thanks to one of my business suppliers (UpServers) who sponsored a 30GB Solid State Drive! That will be even more energy-saving :)

This is gonna be my new toy for a while! Oh well, when it ships anyway, because the Dell site told me I had to consider 4 weeks delivery time :(

Anyway, I bought it with the default specs (ofcourse, there aren’t many options) but with the 6-cell. Ofcourse I’ll be trying Ubuntu on it, although I haven’t seen anyone do it (I looked around everywhere, but no successstories yet, but no problems either ;) )

Can’t wait for it to get delivered …

After a lot of frustration why I couldn’t get my fancy Compiz desktop working on my GM965 I decided to call my personal guru, roedie (see the links on the right). As if god himself was playing with it, we both found (skyping along) the solution at the same time, so actually I kinda want to take the credits for this myself (A)

Problem: can’t get Compiz working (the visual effects ‘Extra’ radiobutton says they cannot be enabled).
Solution: it appeared the card was blacklisted, so you have to tell Compiz to NOT check this.

lspci: 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

as root or sudo do the following:
create the file: ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
add the following line: SKIP_CHECKS=yes

and try again ;)

this post is for my own reference and future frustration and ofcourse to help some others with the same crappy card. Until now I didn’t see any reason why it’s blacklisted, even the water and fire plugins work (which I thought didn’t earlier).

mmm nu het ‘schrijfseizoen’ weer een beetje over is (ik schrijf samen met een vriendin voor een blad in het onderwijs, dus we hebben even zomerstop) bruis ik ineens van de inspiratie. Merkwaardig, want ik moet het er altijd op het allerlaatste deadline-moment zien uit te persen.

Desalnietteplus was mijn vader er even met Pinksteren en zag de schilderijtjes die ik samen met Pjotr aan de muur aan het kloten was. Vraagt hij heel onnozel: “Hoe kom je eigenlijk aan die schilderijen?”. Heb hem al duizend keer verteld dat ik ze zelf heb geschilderd maar dat is blijkbaar nooit doorgedrongen.

Anyway. Ik ga dus nu, voor de papa een nieuw schilderijtje op het doek poepen! Heb er nu al zin in :) Alleen weer even kwasten, doek en verf aanschaffen. Nu maar hopen dat ik ze deze keer wel weg wil doen (A) anders wordt mijn huis zo vol.
